Fire Extinguishers
Learn to use fire extinguishers correctly and safely
What you'll be able to do
•Match the fire extinguisher class to the type of fire, distinguishing ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids, and electrical fires
•Operate an extinguisher using the pull, aim, squeeze, and sweep sequence
•Judge when a fire is small and contained enough to fight versus when to evacuate
•Check that an extinguisher is charged, accessible, and inspected before you would ever rely on it
Who it's for
Employees who may be expected to use a portable fire extinguisher on a small, incipient fire, and anyone responsible for keeping extinguishers stocked and accessible. Best taken after the fire safety course.
What changes on the job
•Correct extinguisher class chosen for the fire instead of grabbing the nearest one
•Confident use of the pull-aim-squeeze-sweep technique
•Extinguishers kept charged, unblocked, and ready

Does watching this mean I am trained to fight any fire?
No. It builds knowledge of how extinguishers work and when to use one. Hands-on practice with a live or simulated fire, where your employer offers it, cements the skill. The course is clear that extinguishers are only for small, contained fires.
How long is it?
About 15 minutes, self-paced. It builds directly on the fire safety course in the same EH&S track.
What if I use the wrong class of extinguisher?
Using the wrong type can be ineffective or dangerous, for example using water on an electrical or grease fire. The course explains how to identify each class so you match the extinguisher to the fire.
