HR & Compliance, 15 minutes, self-paced

Anti-Discrimination & Title IX

Covers Title IX for people who work at or on federally funded educational institutions, and for the contractors and employers who work on federally funded campuses. If your workplace is not one of those, Title IX does not govern it and this course is not the general anti-discrimination training for your role. It covers the sex-based conduct Title IX defines as sexual harassment, what makes an environment legally hostile, why conduct that falls below that bar is still reported to the Title IX Coordinator, whose knowledge triggers the institution's duty to respond, and what a violation can cost in funding and fines. Consent is defined by the policy of your institution and its jurisdiction, not by a single federal definition.

What you will learn

  • Describe what Title IX covers, who it applies to, and how it differs from criminal law
  • Identify the sex-based conduct Title IX defines as sexual harassment, including quid pro quo conditioning by an employee, sexual violence, dating and domestic violence, and stalking
  • Describe the severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive standard for a hostile environment, and state why conduct that does not meet that standard is still reported to the Title IX Coordinator
  • Identify whose knowledge of sexual harassment gives an institution actual knowledge and starts its duty to respond
